Well the invitation to my 25th High School Reunion arrived the other week ... this means I have now officially been out of school twice as long as I was in. (I dare say, if you still have any issues about your former secondary education classmates at this point — let them go.)
Speaking of silver anniversaries, this summer marks the 25th year since the release of Tron, and By the User the fanatics have been marking the occasion, albeit in their own geeky way.
In fact, forget graduating from high school— there was a far greater thing to celebrate 25 years ago: it may have been the single greatest year in sci-fi cinema. Certainly the biggest. 1982 saw the release of Tron, Blade Runner, E.T., Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, Conan the Barbarian, John Carpenter's The Thing and The Road Warrior! It certainly ranks up there with 1968, with 2001: A Space Odessey and Planet of the Apes, and 1977, with Star Wars and Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (hey don't take my word for, Geek Monthly said it's so)
More on Tron, and other cult films coming up...
Anyone here seen the "new" Star Trek yet?
TVLand and other local stations have begun airing reruns of the original series last week. They reshot a lot of the FX -- ala Star Wars special edition -- and have replaced some of the ship visuals with new computer generated images. (Think what they did on the DS9 Trouble with Tribbles tribute and you get the idea.)
The overall effect is strange, if only because a shot is close to the one imprinted on your brain, but is just off enough for you to do a doubletake. I heard they were going to do this for the 40th anniversary but didn't know it was already out.
Honestly, it wasn't necessary ... 1) the new stuff, despite their best efforts to match the old look, is too polished and 2) it just makes the original interior shots (and old SFX they left in) look even cheesier.
Still, nice to be able to plop down on the couch at the end of a day and
see Trek again.
